Whistler Gondolas
Two Mountains, Three Gondolas, and the Easy Way to Ride One
How Whistler's gondolas actually work, what a day trip from Vancouver gets you, and how to buy the PEAK 2 PEAK ticket.
“Whistler gondola” can mean a few different things, and sorting them out is the first step to a good day. Whistler has its own lifts — the Whistler Village Gondola, the Blackcomb Gondola, and the record-breaking PEAK 2 PEAK that flies between the two mountaintops. About 45 minutes south, in Squamish, there’s the Sea to Sky Gondola, which is the one most Vancouver day trips actually ride. This page is the honest map: what each is, how to ride one without a car, and where to buy the tickets we can’t sell you directly.
The straight answer on tickets
Let’s be upfront, because it saves confusion at the base station. Whistler’s own gondolas — the Village Gondola and the PEAK 2 PEAK — are sold directly by Whistler Blackcomb (Vail Resorts). You buy those on their site or at the village; no third-party platform sells them. What you can book through this site is the thing most visitors from Vancouver actually want: a guided day trip that handles the drive, rides the Sea to Sky Gondola, and drops you into Whistler Village with free time — plus the other bookable Whistler adventures further down the page.
The PEAK 2 PEAK, briefly
It deserves its reputation. Opened in 2008, the PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola strings across the valley between Whistler and Blackcomb — about 4.4 km end to end, with the world’s longest unsupported cable span (3.024 km between towers) and a crossing that hangs 436 m above the valley floor. The ride takes around eleven minutes, and a few cabins have glass floors for the nervous and the brave alike. It runs seasonally, so check Whistler Blackcomb’s current dates before you plan a day around it.
The view from the middle of the span — two mountains, a glacier valley, and nothing under your cabin for a kilometre — is the one people remember.
The easy day from Vancouver
If you’re based in Vancouver without a car, the guided day trip is the path of least resistance. It picks you up at a downtown hotel, drives the Sea to Sky Highway along Howe Sound, and rides the Sea to Sky Gondola in Squamish — which has its own summit, the Sky Pilot Suspension Bridge, and viewing platforms over the fjord. From there it continues to Whistler Village for free time to wander, eat, and, if you choose, ride Whistler’s own gondola on your own. On the way back it stops at Shannon Falls, one of British Columbia’s tallest waterfalls. It’s a full day — about ten hours — and it’s rated 4.7/5 by more than 1,300 travelers.
Self-drive or coach instead
Prefer your own pace? Whistler is roughly 120 km — about a two-hour drive — north of Vancouver on Highway 99, a spectacular route in its own right. Driving lets you choose your gondola (Sea to Sky on the way, or Whistler’s own once you arrive) and linger as long as you like. A scheduled coach is the budget middle ground: it gets you to the village, but the gondolas and your day are then yours to arrange. Our getting-there guide lays out all three.
When to go
Summer is the sweet spot for sightseeing — long days, open trails, and the PEAK 2 PEAK running for its valley views. Whistler hosted the alpine events of the 2010 Winter Olympics, and in winter it’s a world-class ski resort, with the sightseeing gondolas on a different schedule. The guided day trip from Vancouver runs in the warmer months, when the Sea to Sky Gondola and Whistler’s trails are at their best.
Quick tips
- Book the day trip with free cancellation — mountain weather changes, and a refundable ticket up to 24 hours before takes the gamble out.
- Buy PEAK 2 PEAK direct from Whistler Blackcomb, and check it’s running on your date before you count on it.
- Pack a warm layer even in summer — the tops of the mountains are far cooler than the village.
- Give Whistler Village real time — the pedestrian core, patios, and lake trails are worth more than a quick lap.

Frequently Asked Questions About Whistler & Its Gondolas
How the gondolas work, what the day trip includes, and how to plan your visit.
Whistler has two of its own: the Whistler Village Gondola (and the Blackcomb Gondola) that carry you up the mountains, and the record-setting PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola that links the tops of Whistler and Blackcomb. Separately, about 45 minutes south in Squamish, the Sea to Sky Gondola is the gondola most Vancouver day trips ride on the way up. This site helps you book a day trip that includes the Sea to Sky Gondola and shows you how to buy Whistler's own gondola tickets.
Whistler's own Village Gondola and PEAK 2 PEAK sightseeing tickets are sold directly by Whistler Blackcomb (Vail Resorts) — you buy them on their website or at the village base, not through third-party platforms. What you can book here is a guided day trip from Vancouver that rides the Sea to Sky Gondola and gives you free time in Whistler Village, plus other bookable Whistler experiences like ziplines and helicopter tours. See our Whistler gondola tickets guide for prices and how to buy.
The featured day trip includes round-trip transport from a downtown Vancouver hotel up the Sea to Sky Highway, a ride on the Sea to Sky Gondola in Squamish, a photo stop at Shannon Falls, and free time to explore Whistler Village — plus a guide and a downloadable Whistler Village walking tour. It runs about 10 hours and includes hotel pickup and drop-off.
No — and it's worth being clear. The day trip rides the Sea to Sky Gondola in Squamish, about 45 minutes (60 km) south of Whistler. Whistler's own Village Gondola and the PEAK 2 PEAK between Whistler and Blackcomb are a separate experience you'd ride and pay for in Whistler itself. The day trip gives you free time in the village if you'd like to do that on your own.
The guided Sea to Sky Gondola + Whistler day trip starts from around $122 per person, including transport, the gondola ticket, and stops. Whistler's own PEAK 2 PEAK sightseeing ticket (bought separately from Whistler Blackcomb) is priced on its own — see our tickets guide for current rates.
Whistler is about 120 km (a 2-hour drive) north of Vancouver on the Sea to Sky Highway (Highway 99). You can drive, take a scheduled coach, or join a guided day trip that handles the driving and includes a gondola ride. See our getting-there guide for all the options.
With a 4.7 out of 5 rating from over 1,300 travelers, the guided day trip is a popular way to see the highlights — the Sea to Sky Highway, a gondola ride, Shannon Falls, and Whistler Village — without renting a car or planning logistics. If you want to ride Whistler's own PEAK 2 PEAK, plan to do that in the village with the free time the tour gives you, or stay overnight.
Whistler's PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola spans the valley between Whistler and Blackcomb mountains — one of the longest unsupported lift spans in the world — and the crossing takes about 11 minutes each way. It runs seasonally; check Whistler Blackcomb for current operating dates before planning around it.
Summer (June–September) is ideal for sightseeing, hiking, and the gondolas, with the longest hours and the PEAK 2 PEAK running. Winter is ski season — world-class, but the sightseeing gondolas and some experiences operate on a different schedule. The guided day trip from Vancouver runs in the warmer months when the Sea to Sky Gondola and Whistler's trails are at their best.
Layers — the mountains are cooler than the city, even in summer — plus comfortable walking shoes, sun protection, and a camera. For the day trip you don't need anything special; just be ready at your Vancouver hotel for the morning pickup.
Day trips run rain or shine, and the gondola operates in most weather (it pauses only in high winds). The featured day trip offers free cancellation up to 24 hours before, so you can rebook if the forecast looks poor.
